The Many Uses of Sentri7

The following are real uses of Sentri7 submitted by our customers:

  • Sentri7 helps USA Medical Center identify potential coding problems. Sentri7 is able to query patients for those on medications that would typically be prescribed for a congestive heart failure (CHF) patient. They can then verify with the physician whether or not the patient has CHF, and if so, provide the education in line with core measures and document the activity in the patient's medical record.

  • Pharmacy and risk management can track usage of antidotes throughout the hospital.

  • Another medical center has focused their Sentri7 rules to the Joint Commission Core Measures (Pneumovax immunization, ASA and beta blockers in AMI). By aligning the rules with their specific clinical programming, they have been able to increase the quality of interventions. In addition, they anticipate increased core measure compliance and financial cost avoidance.

  • Sentri7 can track positive cases of influenza and other communicable diseases for reporting to public health departments.

  • Infection control practitioners can use Sentri7 to alert them to any patients with positive cultures for MRSA, C. Diff or other possible hospital-acquired infections.

  • Laboratory or Dietary can easily see a list of patients currently on TPN.

  • A Tuomey Healthcare System list in Sentri7 shows patients with INRs greater than 2.9 to help comply with the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goal 3E on anticoagulation. "It's an easy way to alert us to the patients that we're following on Coumadin that we need to adjust their dose," said Julia Mims, PharmD, Pharmacy Clinical Manager.

  • Respiratory therapy can easily view a list of all patients on inhalers or nebulizers.

  • Meritus Medical Center's Quality department identifies patients at high-risk for falls by matching patient demographics against their medication lists.

  • Sentri7 can search for patients that might qualify for certain treatment programs or drug studies.

  • Sentri7 can help pharmacists identify patients that need renally-adjusted dosing of their medications, or identify patients that are on IV medications which could potentially be switched to oral medications.

  • Arkansas Heart Hospital, set up a list in Sentri7 for statins. Simvastatin is the hospital's main statin of choice, and they substitute it for all other statins. But, if a patient is on amiodarone as well, the maximum recommended dose of simvastatin is 20mg. So this list gives all patients who are on simvastatin in a dose greater than 20mg who are also on amiodarone. Then a pharmacist can write an order to decrease the simvastatin dose.

  • Nutrition Services uses Sentri7 to identify patients on Coumadin to put them on a diet that is low in Vitamin K.

  • Sentri7 looks for all patients on the drug heparin who also have low platelet counts or have seen a reduction in platelet counts by 20% over the last three days for possible heparin-induced thrombocytopenia.

  • Sentri7 can identify patients on particularly irritating medications and medications that have a high predisposition to blowing veins.

  • One hospital's risk department had identified Celebrex-related adverse drug reactions associated with serum creatinine levels. Within five minutes a rule was written and deployed within Sentri7, and now all patients on Celebrex with serum creatinine > 1.2 are identified and monitored within that organization to prevent ADRs.

  • Sentri7 can identify all patients prescribed a certain medication in the case of a recall.

  • Case Management Nurses are tasked with using Sentri7 to identify patients not in compliance with CMS quality measures related to heart failure and acute myocardial infarction.

  • Halifax Regional Hospital's microbiology laboratory uses Sentri7 to identify culture results that would indicate that a particular antibiotic would be resistant in a patient.

  • Sentri7 can provide a report of all the patients who are receiving any type of anticoagulant so they are provided with appropriate education for NPSG 3E.

  • The laboratory staff can use Sentri7 identify patients on oral oncology agents who are immuno-suppressed. The use of gamma irradiated blood products are indicated in these patients to prevent a serious, possibly life threatening complication called graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).
